On September 30, 2025, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck off the northern coast of Cebu, destroying houses in central Philippines, damaging bridges and roads, and resulting in several dozen fatalities. Hundreds were injured, and thousands evacuated their homes during the intense shaking.
This tectonic earthquake recorded a seismic intensity of 6.9 in parts of Cebu and Leyte islands. According to authorities, 89 municipalities were affected, with over 80,000 households and approximately 366,000 people impacted. As aftershocks continue, many are forced to live in evacuation centers.
Some residents wrote messages on the roads and held up signs asking for food, water, and other assistance. In many areas, the situation remains dire as electricity and clean water are still unavailable.
Smiles volunteers distribute relief supplies
Many areas in Cebu still have not received aid from the government or other organizations. One such area, Barangay Malingin in Cebu Province, was reported on by Ramil Roquia, a faithful member of Smiles, who recently returned to the Philippines. He reached out to Smiles to connect them with resources that could support this community.
Discussions with residents revealed that many people are still unable to return home. Without nearby evacuation centers, families are staying outside their houses for safety.

On October 8, 2025, Ramil and several friends delivered tents, food, and water to affected families. Due to the location being inaccessible by vehicles, the volunteers carried the supplies by hand. During the distribution, an aftershock occurred, causing temporary panic, but the team continued their activities safely. Smiles was the first group to reach this area and provide assistance, which made the residents extremely grateful.
Sharing smiles across borders

To remain true to their mission of 'Sharing Smiles', the Smiles team continues to extend support to those in need, even through members who have already returned from Japan.
