Donation and Support

The devastating flash floods that recently struck Sumatra, Indonesia, have left a deep impact on thousands of families. According to data from the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), as of Dec. 18, the disaster has affected 52 districts, claiming 1,059 lives and leaving 7,000 injured.
In the face of such hardship, Smiles Mobile Remittance proved that distance is never a barrier to compassion. Through the “Transactions Become Caring Actions” initiative, Smiles invited the global community to join hands in the spirit of #SolidarityDiaspora. The contributions from the Smiles community in Japan serve as proof that we can still be present and provide hope for those back home.
From transactions to support

At Smiles, we believe that sending money home is more than just a transfer – it is an act of love. To lead this effort, Smiles Mobile Remittance donated 500,000 yen through our trusted partner and a leading humanitarian nonprofit organization in Indonesia, Dompet Dhuafa.
These funds were converted into essential packages, including:
165 school kits: New backpacks, books and stationery to help children return to their studies.
200 hygiene kits: Essential supplies including soap, towels and cleaning items to maintain health.
Additionally, Smiles Mobile Remittance customers in Japan stepped up through a voluntary donation drive, contributing an extra 38,500 yen. Every yen was directed toward purchasing groceries and emergency kits for those who lost everything.
Witnessing resilience in Sumatra

On Dec. 14 and 15, members of the Smiles Indonesia Team traveled to North Sumatra to work side-by-side with Dompet Dhuafa. Being there in person allowed the team to witness the aftermath of the typhoon and the resilient spirits of the survivors.
The arrival of the aid brought more than just supplies; it brought smiles. For many children, seeing new school bags replace the ones washed away by the floods was a moment of pure joy, sparking enthusiasm to return to the classroom.
A voice from the heart: Sari’s story

During the visit to Hamlet 9, Puguan, Langkat, the Smiles team met Sari, a mother and resident of the village. She shared the harrowing experience of watching floodwaters rise to an adult’s chest height, sweeping away her family’s food and her children’s school supplies.
“We struggled even to find a meal,” Sari said. “The public kitchen, the groceries and especially the school kits for my children have been a lifeline. It helps us feel that we aren’t alone as we try to rebuild.”
While the water is receding, the journey to recovery is far from over. Secondary flooding remains a threat, and the need for ongoing concern and support remains high.
Thank you, Smiles community!

Smiles Mobile Remittance extends its deepest gratitude to the Smiles customers who participated in the “Transactions Become Caring Actions” program. Support, big or small, proves that people can unite even when there’s distance.
Smiles also extends its highest appreciation to its team members and Dompet Dhuafa for their tireless work on the front lines, ensuring the Smiles community’s generosity reached those who needed it most, safely and directly.
Together with Smiles, let’s continue to realize #SolidarityDiaspora, because every transaction can be an action, and every action can bring hope to those in need.
